Intense fighting between the military and Islamist militants in Northern Nigeria is reported of killing at least one hundred and eighty five civilians and destroyed two thousand homes. Government and military officials say Rocket-propelled grenades and heavy gun fire bombarded the remote and previously peaceful town of Baga close to the border with Chad. Residents fled and then returned to see much of the town destroyed.
The BBC has received a video footage which shows Burmese police standing by as Buddhist gangs attacking and killing Muslims. The footage was filmed by the police in the town of Meiktila during several days of communal violence in late March which left at least 43 people died.
The Boston police commissioner says he believes the men suspected of carrying out the Marathon bombings were planning more attacks. Edward Davis said the two brothers had enough fire power unused as explosive to attack other targets. The authorities still have to question the surviving brother.
Syrian opposition sources say government defensive on the town of Damascus has left many people dead. The source said the attack on the town of Jdaidet al-Fadl lasted five days, with at least eighty people killed; several of them were women and children although many others were rebel fighters.
The Paraguay business man and football executive Horacio Cartes has won his Sunday presidential election, bringing his Colorado party back to power. His main rival the ruling liberal party candidate Efrain Alegre, has considered defeat. Mr. Cartes faces the challenges of restoring the country’s reputation in the region following last year’s controversial impeachment of president Fernando Lugo and fighting the country’s high levels of poverty.
At least ten thousand of Hungarians, twice the usual number, have marched in Budapest in the annual holocaust commemoration. This year the march highlighted and perceived recent rise in anti-Semitism and racism in the country. |
